Real Golf La Manga (North course)

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1972

Real (Royal) Golf La Manga Club (North/Norte course): At La Manga, three championship golf courses, a Seve Ballesteros designed Pitch & Putt course and excellent practice facilities come together in one of Spain's most visited and popular golf venues. Benefitting from excellent maintenance, each of the well-crafted layouts will test and hone your game.

Although the longer South course generally hosts the biggest tournaments at La Manga, many consider the slightly more undulating North course to be the more scenic and technically demanding layout.

Precision rather than length is a better strategy for success on the North course. There is not too much in the way of penal rough to contend with, but plentiful bunkering as well as tighter fairways and larger greens create the need for good course management.

Occasional ponds and 'barrancas' are also part of the North's defences, the natural storm gullies snaking their way through the layout. As on the adjoining South course, a liberal scattering of small palm trees line many of the fairways, producing that unmistakable and classic "La Manga" look.

Did you know?

The La Manga Club dates back to 1972, when Californian golfer and business entrepreneur Gregory Peters set about establishing a sports and leisure resort in the Region of Murcia. He discovered an ideal location between Cartagena and La Manga, and bought a large plot of wasteland known as Atamaría from the local farmers. The Spanish Levante (Iberia's eastern seaboard) was about to be put on the golfing map.

Peters, a great visionary, appointed the legendary golfer Gary Player as La Manga's first director of golf, followed by Manuel Ballesteros, Seve’s brother, and Víctor García, Sergio García’s father. The golf courses were complemented by other key resort facilities, most notably a luxury hotel and residential apartments, a football centre, and a tennis complex ... all benefitting from the patronage of many celebrities and top sports teams.

Of the La Manga courses, the South course has frequently hosted top level professional and amateur championships, not least several Spanish Opens, Ladies Spanish Opens and European Senior Masters tournaments (see our Tournaments section >by Venue >La Manga).

Tournaments

Sony Open in Hawaii: played at Waialae Country Club near Honolulu, the Sony Open takes over the spotlight from The Sentry as the PGA Tour’s calendar-year opening event (Jan 15-18). The Sentry (not being played in 2026) was formerly known as the Tournament of Champions, with a field typically restricted to golfers who won a PGA Tour event in the previous calendar year.

Dubai Desert Classic: the DP World Tour’s first Rolex Series event of 2026, is contested for the 37th time (Jan 22-25). First won by Englishman Mark James in 1989, it now boasts a four-time winner, Rory McIlroy. Played on the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course, this once desert-surrounded course is the long-time flagship for Golf in Dubai.

Our visit last month included two rounds at Golf de Chantilly, one of France’s most prestigious clubs.
It offers two superb layouts: Le Vineuil, a five-star championship course with a rich history, and Longères, an excellent four-star course that provides a strong and enjoyable test.

The wider Paris region offers plenty more. Courses such as Fontainebleau, Golf de Saint-Germain, and several other top-rated layouts make this area one of Europe’s most rewarding golf destinations, offering a mix of woodland, heathland, and parkland designs.
