Sanlucar Club de Campo

3-star: Good course – an enjoyable test for your game.

Est. 2004

Sanlucar Club de Campo: Located on Spain's quieter and perhaps lesser known Costa de la Luz, the Sanlucar Golf Club occupies a ridge of higher ground, the Loma de Martin Miguel. From this elevated position you will enjoy many spectacular views of the mouth of the River Guadalquivir as it flows into the Atlantic Ocean, as well as the Doñana National Park and the vineyards of Jerez.

This challenging and scenic layout, with rural countryside lining many of the holes, is also routed through some of the estate's new housing, although the holiday villas are generally out of harm's way from any errant golf shots. Although the layout is a couple of kilometres from the seashore, the front-nine has the look and feel of a British links-style course.

Rolling, good-width fairways with plenty of humps and hollows, small deep bunkers and an open landscape are all key ingredients. The wide fairways are required to make the course a fair challenge, not least if the famous Levante and Poinente winds are blowing, which may well be the case, especially if you set out for an afternoon round.

Sanlucar's back-nine is based more on a US-influenced resort style, with water hazards (small lakes) testing your course management and shot-making on seven of the nine holes. The excellent quality greens are generally large and full of testing slopes and borrows.

Many different species of trees have been planted around the course, which will add a new dimension as they continue to mature.

Did you know?

The Costa de la Luz (Coast of Light) is the western part of the Andalucía coastline that faces out to the Atlantic. The sand is reputedly finer and a more golden colour than on the neighbouring Costa del Sol. The Costa de la Luz is often regarded as a more natural region, not having seen the extensive high-rise hotel development of other coastal areas of Spain.

Often divided into two sections, the Costa de la Luz (Huelva Province) stretches from the Portuguese border to the Donaña National Park and the River Guadalquivir, which flows through Seville on its way out to the Atlantic Ocean just above Sanlucar de Barrameda. Costa de la Luz (Cadiz Province) stretches from the River Guadalquivir to Tarifa at the mouth of the Mediterranean sea. To travel from one section to another requires a drive via the historic city of Sevilla.

Tournaments

The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.
