Victoria Golf & Country Resort: less than an hour's drive from the central Sri Lankan city of Kandy, the Victoria resort sits on a peninsula of land, surrounded by the upcountry Victoria Reservoir (Mahaweli Ganga).
Occupying what was once a coconut plantation in a stunningly beautiful setting, this highly regarded and very natural championship course has been excellently crafted by English course architect Donald Steel.
Steel's thoroughly absorbing and challenging layout (built almost entirely by hand by local labour), includes a wonderful collection of golf holes. At the top of the course, players delight at the gorgeous views from the tiny 116-yard par-3 4th. Next up is the risk-reward par-4 5th, the high road-low road fairway split by a central mound that sports a good-size tree. And then onto the dramatically plunging par-4 6th ... everybody's favourite it would seem, unless they suffer seriously from vertigo.
Although the layout can boast only a dozen bunkers, it really doesn't need any more than this. A bit quirky and narrow at times, this playable and immensely scenic course is what fun and adventurous golf is all about. If you're visiting Sri Lanka, you must play it.

Less than an hour's drive from the large city of Kandy, the Victoria Reservoir was created in 1978, following the building of the Victoria Dam ... a hydroelectric power project. The dam required the resettlement of 30,000 people.
