Varbergs Golfklubb (Västra/West course)

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1992

Varbergs Golfklubb (Västra/West course): Very different from its sister course (the Östra), here we have a much more open and tougher proposition in Varberg's Västra (West) course. After two holes through a semi-wooded setting, the main part of the golf course is revealed at the par-4 3rd.

The challenge, for all players, comes in the form of uncompromising and ball-swallowing rough, extraordinarily large greens, several water hazards, and occasionally some clumps of trees that encroach onto the fairways - picking a good driving line from the tee and executing it is vital.

The front-nine's proximity to the Malmo-Goteborg motorway adds to the challenges, but thankfully the noise subsides on the back-nine. A tough golf course for players of all standards, but not one to miss if you visit this area of Sweden.

Did you know?

The Varbergs Golfklubb dates back to 1950, however the two courses currently in play were created in 1976 (Östra/East) and 1992 (Västra/West).

Although part of the same Varbergs Golfklubb, the Östra and Västra courses are located 13 miles apart; the former in a forest environment just south of Rolfstorp, the latter just north west of Tvaaker and south of Varberg, close to the E6/E20 Malmo-Goteborg motorway.

Lottie Woad: 21-year-old Woad burst onto the professional scene in July, with wins in the Women’s Irish Open (as an amateur) and three weeks later in the Women’s Scottish Open (as a professional). She nearly picked-up a major championship, placing third in The Evian in the same month.

Pádraig Harrington: the ever-likeable Irishman added the (British) Senior Open Championship title to his stellar array of tournament successes. His win came on Sunningdale’s spectacular Old Course. Harrington had already bagged the U.S. Senior Open title in June this year.
