Aquella Golf & Country Club: the layout here at Aquella occupies the northern part of a site that once was home to the Thai Muang golf course. After a period of closure lasting nine years, Thai Muang was reborn as Aquella, and a completely redesigned course opened for play in 2020.
Course architects Paul Reeves and Phil Ryan only used about 30% of the land from the former course. Much of the new course, comprising two nine-hole loops, lies to the north of the former Perry Dye layout. Whereas some holes on the old course were routed parallel to the beach, the new layout touches the beach at one point, and is mostly played just behind the proposed location for the beach resort and villas.
The timber-faced bunkers in the old layout became a signature for the new course, paying homage to a hallmark feature of Dye designs. Water is also much in play on the new course, as it was on the old. Several "klongs" (creeks) wind their way through the site. Aquella's greens are typically large, fast and undulating. They putt true and will reward a good line and pace.
Pick of the holes: at the heavily bunkered signature par-3 11th, which measures 161 yards from the tips, you get alongside the beach of the azure blue Andaman Sea.

Previously this site was home to the Perry Dye-designed Thai Muang Golf Course, which closed for 9 years between 2011 and 2020. In 2021 the new Aquella course opened for play, with most of the new layout located to the north of the old course.
Aquella plays alongside the Andaman Sea. This large body of water is bounded by Myanmar (Burma) and Thailand to the north and east, Malaysia and Sumatra to the south, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands to the west. Beyond the Andaman and Nicobar Islands lies the Bay of Bengal (Indian Ocean).
The course design of Aquella incorporates specially crafted bamboo tunnels between some holes. As golfers pass through the tunnels they experience a cooling effect due to the shade and wind tunnel combination ... most welcome in the tropical heat of southern Thailand.
Sony Open in Hawaii: played at Waialae Country Club near Honolulu, the Sony Open takes over the spotlight from The Sentry as the PGA Tour’s calendar-year opening event (Jan 15-18). The Sentry (not being played in 2026) was formerly known as the Tournament of Champions, with a field typically restricted to golfers who won a PGA Tour event in the previous calendar year.
Dubai Desert Classic: the DP World Tour’s first Rolex Series event of 2026, is contested for the 37th time (Jan 22-25). First won by Englishman Mark James in 1989, it now boasts a four-time winner, Rory McIlroy. Played on the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course, this once desert-surrounded course is the long-time flagship for Golf in Dubai.
Our visit last month included two rounds at Golf de Chantilly, one of France’s most prestigious clubs.
It offers two superb layouts: Le Vineuil, a five-star championship course with a rich history, and Longères, an excellent four-star course that provides a strong and enjoyable test.
The wider Paris region offers plenty more. Courses such as Fontainebleau, Golf de Saint-Germain, and several other top-rated layouts make this area one of Europe’s most rewarding golf destinations, offering a mix of woodland, heathland, and parkland designs.
The Dutch: "It's no' just a game", as they say in Scotland, and that's certainly true at The Dutch. With 5-star services throughout, a lavishly comfortable Loch Lomond-inspired clubhouse, and a superbly designed and presented golf course, one could not ask for more from this top-end private club.
