Capitol Hill (Judge)
RTJ Golf Trail - Capitol Hill (Judge course): A 200 feet drop at the par-4 1st hole, with water along the right side of the fairway, and swamp to the left, gives clear warning that this is not a Judge to be messed with. There will be other knee-trembling moments in the Judge's presence, as you make your way round one of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail's best and most challenging layouts.
After the dramatic elevation change of the opening (and many would say signature) hole, much of the rest of the course is played on flatter terrain, where two large lakes and attendant swamp provide the principal hazards, and quite a few photo opportunities as well.
With often tightish fairways, penal rough (where water doesn't threaten), mounded and pot bunkering, and large undulating greens, you are promised few dull moments. The Judge is capable of giving you quite a torrid ride, especially on a first outing. There are no end of great holes on this layout; the 6th over water is a world-class par-3, and the following long par-5 is as tough as they come.
Treat this Judge with plenty of humility and respect and you'll do fine. Blaze away without a thought for course management, and the impact on your score could be penal! This is one of the Trail's most natural and toughest challenges, a course of great beauty and huge reputation.

The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail is a unique collection of eleven excellent golf venues spread through the State of Alabama. Dr. David Bronner, the then CEO of the organisation that ran the Alabama state-employees pension funds, originally conceived the idea of the Trail.
Bronner was convinced that creating a top-quality golf trail would attract golfers from near and far, raise Alabama's profile and at the same time earn a good return for the pension fund monies invested in the project - the world's largest golf course building project ever undertaken.
The original courses on the Trail (located at Hampton Cove, Silver Lakes, Oxmoor Valley, Capitol Hill, Grand National, Cambrian Ridge, Magnolia Grove, and Highland Oaks) were all designed by Robert Trent Jones and opened for play in 1992. Lakewood GC at Point Clear was acquired along with the Grand Hotel; its two golf courses were recently renovated and included in the Trail. Although not designed by Trent Jones, The Shoals and Ross Bridge were added to the Trail in more recent years.
