RTJ Golf Trail: Highland Oaks Golf Course

4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Est. 1992

RTJ Golf Trail's Highland Oaks Golf Course represent the south-eastern outpost of Alabama's Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. Here the three nine-hole loops - Highlands, Magnolia and Marshwood - each contain a wonderful variety of exquisitely designed golf holes.

As with most of the Trail courses, the terrain is pleasantly undulating, creating plenty of elevated tees and elevated greens, much favoured by designer, Robert Trent Jones Snr. The rolling wooded fairways, undulating greens and excellent bunkering all contribute to the excellence of the design.

Swampy forest on Marshwood, cathedral like rows of pine trees and several lakeside holes on the Highlands, and (you guessed it) an abundance of magnolias on the third nine, create different nuances on each of these closely-related and equally enjoyable layouts. If there has to be a favourite, Magnolia's naturalness may just tip the balance, especially with its wonderful boardwalk ride through the swamp that comes along on two occasions.

On all the courses you'll get a good look at each hole from the generally elevated tees and your shot strategy should be clear to see. However, on Marshwood's behemoth 701-yard par-5 6th, the journey from tee-to-green lays down an arduous test, especially on your first outing here.

The par-4 3rd and par-3 4th holes on the Highlands-nine excitingly play next to the good-sized Wheelless Lake. The Highlands and less so the Marshwood loops have some up-market real estate alongside a few holes, although nothing to detract from the overall naturalness of Highland Oaks.

Did you know?

The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail is a unique collection of eleven excellent golf venues spread through the State of Alabama. Dr. David Bronner, the then CEO of the organisation that ran the Alabama state-employees pension funds, originally conceived the idea of the Trail. Bronner was convinced that creating a top-quality golf trail would attract golfers from near and far, raise Alabama's profile and at the same time earn a good return for the pension fund monies invested in the project - the world's largest golf course building project ever undertaken.

The original courses on the Trail (located at Hampton Cove, Silver Lakes, Oxmoor Valley, Capitol Hill, Grand National, Cambrian Ridge, Magnolia Grove, and Highland Oaks) were all designed by Robert Trent Jones and opened for play in 1992. Lakewood GC at Point Clear was acquired along with the Grand Hotel; its two golf courses were recently renovated and included in the Trail. Although not designed by Trent Jones, The Shoals and Ross Bridge were added to the Trail in more recent years.

Tournaments

The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club: With a clubhouse that might befit a Roman Emperor, and a golf course to match, you can be sure of a memorable outing at Rome's most talked about golf facility.

Jim Fazio's original layout was much changed to create a modern Ryder Cup course ... now one of the Eternal City's (and Italy's) most revered.

Prince's Golf Club, Kent (UK)
