Verrado Golf Club

4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Est. 2004

Verrado Golf Club: located on the western outskirts of Phoenix, at the base of the ruggedly scenic White Tank Mountains, Verrado now comprises 36 holes of championship golf. The original "Founders" course (originally known as Raven Golf Club at Verrado) was joined in 2016 by a new Tom Lehman layout, the "Victory" course.

[Our comments below relate only to the Founders course].

On the fabulous back-nine of the Founders course, your journey will take you on a clockwise loop through the mountain's foothills, where dramatic elevation changes and stunning views create a very special golfing experience. Even on the front-nine, where some of the holes are flanked by unobtrusive real estate, you will enjoy and be challenged by the quality of Tom Lehman and John Fought's collaborative layout.

In this natural, quiet and undulating environment, you can closely inspect the splendid array of desert flora and fauna, with plenty of saguaro cactuses vying for the honour of tallest and grandest. The wonderful dog-legging par-4 2nd hole provides early evidence of the quality of what's to come, and of the top-quality maintenance standards. At the memorable par-4 8th you drive past a small rocky outcrop, while the par-4 9th introduces water for the first time, a small lake and arched bridge providing a picturesque feature that you'll see again at the long downhill par-4 18th.

The course's dramatic intensity (and wind exposure) escalates as you progress into the back-nine. Climbing higher into the foothills, with an eventual and awesome downhill closing stretch, the contrast between the soft rolling fairways and rock-strewn desert grows ever sharper, and the scenic panoramas ever-more breathtaking.

Did you know?

The Verrado Golf Club formerly went under the name of the Raven Golf Club at Verrado. It was a sister course to Raven at South Mountain (now called The Raven, Phoenix), which is located just south of Phoenix. The two "Raven" courses are now separately owned.

Since 2016, the Raven at Verrado (now called the Founders course), has a new soul mate. The 18-hole Victory course is located in the same area beneath the White Tank Mountains, and is another Tom Lehman design.

The relatively young (geologically speaking) "White Tanks" extend back from the Verrado courses for another 12 miles or so, eventually climbing to a height of 4,000 feet. The range is characterised by rocky ridges and deep canyons. During seasonal heavy rainfall, accumulated water rushes through the steep canyons, scouring out a number of depressions or "tanks" in the white granite near the base of the mountains.

The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.
