2100 Costa Del Mar Rd,
Carlsbad, California 92009
18 holes. Tree-lined & open parkland. Undulating terrain - a few slopes to climb.
Residential and the La Costa North course.
Original design by Dick Wilson (1965); later improvements by Joe Lee (1973, 1984).
Above distances are for the Legends course. Also at La Costa Resort is the 18-hole Champions course (par-72; 7,172 yds from back tees).
30 miles N of San Diego
From I-5 (north of San Diego) take exit 44 and head east on La Costa Ave. After 1.8 miles turn left into El Camino Real. After 500 yds turn right at traffic lights into Costa del Mar Rd and follow signs to resort and golf.
La Costa Resort (Legends course): Perhaps feeling a bit tighter than its revered sibling (the Champions course), La Costa's Legends course (formerly known as the South course) also provides an excellent test of golf in a resort-style setting.
The early holes on this attractive and well-maintained parkland layout take you up and over a small hill, after which the course assumes a flatter persona. Water is quite frequently in play, particularly with the picturesque San Marcos Creek winding its way through the course en route to Batiquitos Lagoon and the Ocean. Tall eucalyptus, oak and pines are integral to the course's parkland character, lightly lining many of the fairways.
As on the Champions course, excellent bunkering, and plenty of it, surrounds the not overly large and subtly sloping greens. With pleasant, rather than dramatic views onto tree and house-clad hills, you can concentrate on hitting those straight drives and well-judged approach shots, which the many well-crafted holes demand.
Although La Costa's Champions course may win more of the accolades, don't overlook the Legends on your visit here. It too has much to offer in terms of golfing challenge and enjoyment.
