Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort (Sun Mtn course)

4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort (Sun Mtn course): Located just 20 miles outside the city, but well beyond the limits of any urban development, the Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort is home to three fabulous desert-style courses (Snow Mountain, Sun Mountain and Wolf). Each of the three courses is a gem in its own right, characterised by an immaculately maintained, classically testing Pete Dye design. There's also a spectacular, hacienda style clubhouse.

The Sun Mountain course (Tav-Ai Kaiv) has a lot in common with its twin, Snow Mountain (Nu-Wav Kaiv). The gently undulating and wonderfully natural desert terrain, provides an always interesting and challenging layout, as well as stunning desert and mountain views.

There is generally enough room from the tee to hit the good-width fairways, or stray into the not overly penal first-cut of rough. However, the wind has been known to blow out here, and with it the fairways seem to narrow, the large and open bunkers expand, and the ball-swallowing desert brush that borders the holes comes more into the reckoning.

Like its two companions, the Sun Mountain is a fabulous golf course, ensuring your biggest challenge at Paiute is deciding which of the three to play.

Pick of the holes: the Sun Mountain layout contains many elegantly dog-legging holes, and some real stunners. Among the most memorable, the par-5 11th is played from a slightly elevated tee to a fairway that meanders uphill to a plateau green. As with many holes there are views out across the wide open desert to a rugged mountain backdrop in the distance.

Did you know?

Paiute (sometimes written Piute) refers to two related groups of Native Americans: the Northern Paiute of California, Nevada and Oregon, and the Southern Paiute of Arizona, southeastern California, Nevada and Utah.

The Paiute people, as well as other Native Americans such as Bannocks, Comanches, Chemehuevi, Goshutes, and Shoshones, spoke with dialects of the Ute language (one of the Uto-Aztecan languages). The meaning of the word Paiute is not completely clear. Anthropologists have either interpreted it as pah-ute (meaning Water-Ute) or pai-ute (meaning True-Ute).

Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort is a member of the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary System, committed to the maintenance and development of the natural environment around the golf courses.
