Monarch Dunes Golf Club

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 2006

Monarch Dunes Golf Club: Located just a few miles south of Arroyo Grande on California's Central Coast, Monarch Dunes features the award-winning Old Course as well as the newer 12-hole Challenge course.

Laid out on the sand-blown terrain of the Nipomo Mesa, both courses were designed by Damian Pascuzzo and Steve Pate. Whereas the Challenge course will test your iron-play and short game on this excellent collection of par-3 holes, the championship Old course will ensure every aspect of your game is suitably examined.

Monarch Dunes is part of The Woodlands, a master-planned resort and Trilogy residential community. Although housing lines several holes, sometimes on both sides, enough of the natural habitat has been retained to create a visually attractive golf course. Windswept dunes, eucalyptus trees, coastal vistas and amber-coloured hillsides are frequently more in evidence than the real estate ... and occasionally a sea view can be glimpsed.

Pick of the holes: often quite links-like in character, the layout contains several memorable holes, not least the signature downhill 13th. This testing downhill 423-yard par-4 features a prominent bluff running across the fairway, with the leftside flanked along its entire length by a eucalyptus woodland.

Women’s (British) Open: the last women’s major championship of the season is hosted by Royal Porthcawl GC. It’s the first time this fabulous seaside links course has hosted the event (July 31-Aug 3).

Lottie Woad: 21-year-old Woad burst onto the professional scene in July, with wins in the Women’s Irish Open (as an amateur) and three weeks later in the Women’s Scottish Open (as a professional). She nearly picked-up a major championship, placing third in The Evian in the same month.

Pádraig Harrington: the ever-likeable Irishman added the (British) Senior Open Championship title to his stellar array of tournament successes. His win came on Sunningdale’s spectacular Old Course. Harrington had already bagged the U.S. Senior Open title in June this year.
