Spyglass Hill Golf Course

5-star: Fabulous – courses don’t get much better than this.

Est. 1966

Spyglass Hill Golf Course: The opening holes on this fabulous Robert Trent Jones Sr layout may have you thinking that a round of pure links golf lies ahead. Four of the opening five holes are played in an open oceanside setting, where impressive sand dunes and stunning ocean views are the norm. The par-4 2nd (Billy Bones) and par-3 3rd (Black Spot) almost sidle up to the front-nine of the revered Cypress Point Club.

After this linksy opening, and not unlike the changing fortunes of the characters in Treasure Island (from where Spyglass Hill takes its name), things change dramatically as the holes turn inland. The par-4 6th (Israel Hands) brings you uphill, away from the sea and into the Del Monte forest. Tall monterey pines provide picturesque and natural back-drops to close out the front-nine and throughout the back-nine.

Although the fairways are generally good-width, there is sufficient elevation change and plenty of excellent bunkering to fully probe all facets of your game. Water dangerously threatens only once on the front-nine. However, holes like the par-3 12th (Skeleton Island), par-5 14th (Long John Silver) and par-3 15th (Jim Hawkins), will severely test your approach play with water protecting each of their greens.

With immaculate conditioning throughout and many wonderfully memorable holes (both oceanside and in the forest), "The Glass" (as some locals call it) is right up there with the best of California's many world-class courses.

Did you know?

Spyglass Hill takes its name from one of the key locations featured in Robert Louis Stevenson's best selling yarn, Treasure island (published in 1863). Local legend maintains that Stevenson once wandered this area gathering ideas for his novels. The holes at Spyglass Hill reflect the Treasure Island theme; names like Black Dog, Billy Bones, Long John Silver, Blind Pew and Signal Hill giving a hint of what's to follow.

Spyglass Hill has hosted many top level golf tournaments, among them the early rounds of tournaments like the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am and US Amateur Championship.
