Talega
Talega Golf Club: Laid out in two nine-hole loops to the north and south of an attractive Spanish-style clubhouse, this Fred Couples designed course is one of the area's best. Although skirting through the Talega master-planned community, the houses are usually perched well out of harm's way above the course. Most of the holes occupy two separate and very scenic canyons, with many exciting elevation changes and no end of golfing challenges to be enjoyed along the way.
Supported by good-quality maintenance and presentation, the rolling fairways generally give you enough room off the tee, although anything too wayward could disappear into an array of southern California flora, which line the holes. Also to be avoided, if you can, are the stylish bunkers that Couples has lavishly deployed. The short, uphill par-4 3rd is one of several holes guarded by a riot of bunkers spread along its fairway and menacingly around the green.
Most of the back-nine is played in a picturesque and natural canyon, where real estate is barely noticeable. A bush and tree-filled creek runs through this section of the course, separating many of the holes and creating a slightly tighter feel than on the more open and forgiving front-nine. Here, it is natural vegetation rather than the presence of bunkers that will keep your golfing brain fully engaged.
Both challenging and fun to play, this already well established and popular course will continue to develop into something really special, particularly when a scattering of newer trees fully matures.

Talega Golf Club scenically weaves its way through part of the Talega master planned community, close to the city of San Clemente in Orange County. The golf course is laid out in the western foothills of the Santa Ana mountain range, which separates Orange County from neighbouring Riverside County. Just over a mile from the golf course, Talega Canyon starts its journey into the mountains, skirting the north-western boundary of the huge Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base. Pendleton is the major West Coast base of the U.S. Marine Corps, and its principal amphibious training centre.
