Tustin Ranch
Tustin Ranch Golf Club: Sometimes known as "Palm Springs in Orange County", Tustin Ranch is an unabashed resort-style course, full of waterfalls, fountains, tumbling rock formations and dazzling flower beds, with all the greens ringed by a horseshoe of palm trees. Sometimes, as at the picturesque par-3 11th, all these features are combined in just one hole.
Always presented in tip-top condition, four loops of holes journey out-and-back from the clubhouse, which is itself surrounded on three sides by an attractive lake. The clubhouse shares its moated island with the tees of the 1st and 10th holes, as well as the greens serving the 9th and 18th, both reached with an approach shot over the water.
The par-3 11th green and par-4 12th tees stand on their own islands in an adjacent lake ... the 11th hole as splendid and decorative a creation as the par-3 17th on the Palm course in Desert Springs Resort, Palm Desert (another Ted Robinson design).
Each pair of holes, one heading out and one back, is flanked by housing beyond the course perimeter, although the properties are usually out of harm's way, protected by a good width of lightish grassy rough beyond the fairways. A citrus fruit orchard occupies a small hill behind the 15th tee, providing a reminder of why Orange County was so named.
Good earthmounding helps define several holes, while an array of pot bunkers and more sprawling sand traps are dotted along the fairways and around the often elevated greens. Much more than just a "pretty, resort course", Tustin Ranch is an excellent layout that presents plenty of challenges to golfers of all abilities.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends.
Must book in advance.
Walking permitted. Golf carts available to rent. Caddies available if pre-booked.
Good
Tustin Ranch was formerly a citrus ranch prior to the 1980s, when the entire ranch was developed into an upscale residential community located in the city of Tustin in Orange County. Today there is no citrus growing in Tustin Ranch, or in neighbouring Lemon Heights, although only a mile away across Hwy 261 citrus orchards still flourish.

Lottie Woad: 21-year-old Woad burst onto the professional scene in July, with wins in the Women’s Irish Open (as an amateur) and three weeks later in the Women’s Scottish Open (as a professional). She nearly picked-up a major championship, placing third in The Evian in the same month.
