Golden Horseshoe Golf Club (Gold course)

5-star: Fabulous – courses don’t get much better than this.

Est. 1963

The Golden Horseshoe Golf Club (Gold course): Home to two excellent 18-hole championship golf courses, both layouts here at Golden Horseshoe were crafted by members of the Jones family. The generally higher-ranked Gold course was designed by the incomparable Robert Trent Jones Sr. Its also well-rated and pleasantly testing stablemate, the Green course, was laid out by the great man's son, Rees Jones.

The Gold course is a championship layout that ranks with some of the best in Virginia. This tree-lined parkland course provides a wonderful test for your all-round game, with many attractive, skilfully crafted and challenging holes to enjoy. A must play if you are in the area.

Did you know?

The Legend of the Golden Horseshoe (and source of the golf club's name) dates all the way back to 1716. In this auspicious year, colonial governor Alexander Spotswood (after whom the nine-hole course is named), led a daring 63-man expedition to explore the far reaches of the Virginia colony.

Horseshoes were an essential part of the expedition's equipment, helping the horses cope with the rugged terrain. Legend has it that after the arduous journey, Spotswood rewarded all his companions with a small Golden Horseshoe, some studded with valuable gems. To this day, none of the Golden Horseshoes have been found.

Golden Horseshoe's courses are Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary golf courses.

Tournaments

The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.
