Southern Pines
Southern Pines Golf Club: Amongst Donald Ross's huge legacy in the Pinehurst area are two wonderful golf courses that could in most respects be described as identical twins. However, whereas the Mid Pines Golf Club has benefited from top-quality grooming and immaculate green-keeping, the Southern Pines layout has a more rugged, slightly forgotten look about it. The layouts of these two not overly long courses are astonishingly similar.
The tightly folding and constantly undulating fairways of Southern Pines are lined with majestic pines and dogwoods, and lead you to well-bunkered, often small and devilishly tricky greens. Both of the twins can boast excellent greens, but what Southern Pines currently lacks is the same attention to detail and investment in the rest of its set-up and presentation.
The layout here bears the hallmarks of a bygone era of golf course design, where the holes are wonderfully crafted, water is rarely in play, the next tee box is never far from the previous green, and the generally tightish holes do not need to be over-powered by 350 yard drives.
Southern Pines is an essential part of the Donald Ross trail, a lovely old course, very enjoyable to visit and play, but a course where you wish the presentation could be improved.
