The Match Course at PGA National

4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Est. 1981

The Match course at PGA National (formerly known as The Squire course): designed by Tom Fazio and dedicated to Gene Sarazen, The Match is one of five 18-hole layouts here at PGA National. It was renovated and revamped in 2021 by Andy Staples, to provide a slightly different "match" type venue. Many would say it is also the most scenic of the five, routed through an unobtrusive residential development with plenty of natural ponds, small lakes and wetland areas.

The holes follow the design of many classic links courses; nine holes take you on an expansive journey away from the clubhouse, nine inward holes bring you steadily back. Immaculately presented in keeping with PGA National's high presentation standards, many holes are attractively lined by banyan trees, pines and oaks, as well as wetland areas.

Much of the layout exudes a relatively open feel, bringing with it the presence of ponds both large and small. These threatening water hazards run alongside several fairways and guard many greens. Also stylishly deployed around most greens is an array of relatively shallow, slightly raised lip bunkering, which is generally clear to see but not so easy to evade.

Pick of the holes (on the original Squire course) included the par-5 5th, its fairway squeezing between two scenic wetland areas, and the 12th and 13th holes. These handsome back-to-back par-4s, one long, the other short, are separated by an elegant stand of pines. As at the par-5 1st, the par-5 closing hole lays down a challenging carry over water to reach the green ... yet another excellent risk-reward opportunity on this thoroughly enjoyable but not overly long Tom Fazio layout.

Did you know?

The Match course, formerly known as The Squire, was originally named in honour of golfing legend Gene Sarazen, the first player to win all four of the modern Majors and so record the first professional Grand Slam. Affectionately known as "The Squire", he was an exemplary ambassador for the game throughout his career. A true competitor, whose actions both on and off the course make him a role model for all who play and enjoy the game.
