4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Est. 1996

Just off I-95 above Port St Lucie you'll find the PGA Golf Club and its three excellent championship courses - this fabulous triumvirate, comprising two layouts by Tom Fazio (the Ryder and Wanamaker) and one by Pete Dye, are owned and operated by the PGA of America - whereas Scottish flavours permeate the Dye, and Carolina characteristics are found in the Ryder course, the Wanamaker is a classic Florida layout - set against a backdrop of wetlands, palm trees and palmettos, the course attractively weaves its way in two clockwise nine-hole loops - an equal distribution of small lakes, wetland areas and housing flank the holes as they follow the gentle, natural contours of the flowing terrain - large, often deep bunkers stand-out along the generally good-width fairways and around the large and undulating greens - when stylish bunkering is not guarding the putting surfaces, then water will doubtless be present to threaten your approach shots - although some housing is present, the Wanamaker has a mainly open and natural feel - expansive wetland areas, stands of tall pine trees and a liberal scattering of stockier palms predominate - some pleasant elevation changes are found at holes like the par-4 3rd and downhill par-3 6th - the wonderfully elevated green at the short par-4 15th is well worth hitting rather than leaking right into a cavernously deep awaiting bunker - this classically Floridian fusion of small lakes, wetlands and occasional woodland is immaculately presented here on the Wanamaker.

Traigh Golf Course (pronounced "try", and meaning "beach" in Gaelic): You'll find this nine-hole seaside gem on the scenic coast road (as opposed to the more inland and quicker A830) between Arisaig and Morar. Although not on the well-beaten path of Scotland's "trophy" courses, if you are passing through this area, it's a must play.
