The Estate Course at PGA National

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1984

The Estate Course at PGA National: Located 8 miles west of the main PGA National resort centre (and clubhouse of its four peers), the Estate course is one of the shorter and easier-going of PGA National's five 18-hole layouts. Designed by Karl Litten, the holes weave their way through a quiet residential development, with any housing generally set well back from the course.

At just under 6,700 yards from the tips, the Estate course doesn't play too long. Generous fairways will not overly punish stray tee shots, while the large inviting greens, guarded by relatively shallow bunkering, help to maintain the fun element for high handicappers.

You'll need to be mindful of the layout's small ponds, lakes and canal, which flank many of the holes. These threatening water hazards impose the need for some forced carries onto the greens. In this relatively flat and open environment a few holes could benefit from slightly better definition. Like its PGA National companion layouts, the Estate course is excellently presented and maintained.

Pick of the holes: come on the final watery stretch, with the 16th and 17th played alongside a canal, which provides the course's western perimeter. Between these two par-4s you'll enjoy a pleasant canalside cart drive. A nicely doglegging par-5 brings you back to the clubhouse.
