Arcadia Bluffs Golf Club (South course)

4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Est. 2018

Arcadia Bluffs Golf Club: Located two miles south of the original Acradia Bluffs course, the South course is set 1.5 miles back from the shoreline of Lake Michigan. Rather than emulate the links-style of its older sibling, the South course deliberately pays homage to the great American designer Charles Blair Macdonald, and in particular his renowned layout at Chicago Golf Club.

Here at Arcadia Bluffs' newest offering, you'll find many of Macdonald's innovative and distinctive design features ... à la Chicago. Designer Dana Fry's blank canvas for the South course comprised relatively flat terrain, home to open fields, orchards and woodland. Onto this he mapped square-cut tee-boxes, rifle straight fairways, geometric-shaped bunkering and rectangular platform greens ... a tribute to a bygone era. Had he still been alive, surely Macdonald would have been impressed with this "old school" design!

Just 20 miles to the north of Arcadia Bluffs, on the same Lake Michigan shoreline, is the also stunning, but private golf course of Crystal Downs Country Club.

Published ranking

Michigan's 7th best course (Golf Digest, 2023/24).

Lottie Woad: 21-year-old Woad burst onto the professional scene in July, with wins in the Women’s Irish Open (as an amateur) and three weeks later in the Women’s Scottish Open (as a professional). She nearly picked-up a major championship, placing third in The Evian in the same month.

Pádraig Harrington: the ever-likeable Irishman added the (British) Senior Open Championship title to his stellar array of tournament successes. His win came on Sunningdale’s spectacular Old Course. Harrington had already bagged the U.S. Senior Open title in June this year.
