Eagle Ridge Resort & Spa (North course)

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1977

Eagle Ridge Resort & Spa is home to three 18-hole championship courses (the General, North and South) and the 9-hole East course. At this Stay & Play facility, you can rise from your bed in the morning and head straight for the first tee on any of Eagle Ridge's four courses.

The General course is the highest rated of the layouts, while the North and South courses are also well-rated and always popular golf courses. These tree-lined and open parkland layouts should not disappoint, with many attractive features and several excellent holes to enjoy. Plenty of golfing challenge, well-crafted designs and usually good upkeep all contribute to the appeal of the North and South layouts. Worth including on your play list along with the more renowned General.

Eagle Ridge was developed as a purpose-built resort and low-density residential development in the 6,800-acre Galena Territory in northwest Illinois. Land acquisition began in 1970 and ground was broken for the first Information Center/Real Estate office in 1973.

Construction of Lake Galena began in the spring of 1974. The lake covers 220 acres, has an average depth of 25 feet and a maximum depth of 55 feet. It was expected to take 18 months to fill the lake, but it took just seven weeks because of the unusual heavy snow during the winter of 1974-75.

Tournaments

Sony Open in Hawaii: played at Waialae Country Club near Honolulu, the Sony Open takes over the spotlight from The Sentry as the PGA Tour’s calendar-year opening event (Jan 15-18). The Sentry (not being played in 2026) was formerly known as the Tournament of Champions, with a field typically restricted to golfers who won a PGA Tour event in the previous calendar year.

Dubai Desert Classic: the DP World Tour’s first Rolex Series event of 2026, is contested for the 37th time (Jan 22-25). First won by Englishman Mark James in 1989, it now boasts a four-time winner, Rory McIlroy. Played on the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course, this once desert-surrounded course is the long-time flagship for Golf in Dubai.

Our visit last month included two rounds at Golf de Chantilly, one of France’s most prestigious clubs.
It offers two superb layouts: Le Vineuil, a five-star championship course with a rich history, and Longères, an excellent four-star course that provides a strong and enjoyable test.

The wider Paris region offers plenty more. Courses such as Fontainebleau, Golf de Saint-Germain, and several other top-rated layouts make this area one of Europe’s most rewarding golf destinations, offering a mix of woodland, heathland, and parkland designs.
