In the late 1890s a native New Yorker and successful businessman, Charles Campbell Worthington, took up summer residence in the village of Shawnee, alongside the Delaware River. In the early 1900s, he began to implement plans for building his dream, an exclusive resort hotel.
As the hotel grew in size and reputation, its single most remarkable attraction was the golf course constructed on Shawnee Island, and designed by the great A.W. Tillinghast. In 1938 the course played host to the US PGA Championship, in which Paul Runyan prevailed over Sam Snead by a score of 8 & 7.
