Golf course design

Emmet's best known work includes, but is not limited to: Belmont Hills, Bermuda (1924) / Congressional CC, MD (1924, Blue & Gold courses) / Eisenhower Park, NY (1914, Red course) / Garden City GC, NY (1899, original nine holes) / Leatherstocking, NY (1909) / Riddell's Bay, Bermuda (1922) / South Shore, NY (1927) / St George's G&CC, NY (1917) / Wee Burn, CT (1923).

Did you know?

A talented amateur golfer, Emmet was a good friend of Charles Blair Macdonald, also an accomplished amateur (and later to be known as "the father of American golf course architecture"). It was during time spent in Britain with Macdonald, that Emmet also developed a passion for designing golf courses.

In 1897 Emmet designed his first course, the 9-hole layout of the Island Golf Links on Long Island, NY. Two years later the course was expanded to 18 holes and renamed the Garden City Golf Club. In 1924 Emmet hired Alfred H. Tull as a design associate, and in 1929 made him a partner in the firm of Emmet, Emmet & Tull. The partnership with Tull endured until Emmet's death in 1934.

Tournaments

The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.
