McBroom graduated from the University of Guelph in Ontario with a degree in landscape architecture. He intially applied his studies and developed his craft under renowned Canadian golf course architect Clinton E. "Robbie" Robertson, who himself had apprenticed under the great Stanley Thompson.

In 1978, after five years with Robbie Robinson, McBroom branched out and set-up Thomas McBroom Associates Ltd, based in Toronto. The "Thomas McBroom" signature has since become synonymous with many outstanding golf course designs, especially in his native Canada ... and a few beyond. Over ten McBroom designs are routinely ranked in Canada's top 100, only Stanley Thompson himself has more.
