Belmont
Belmont is not only host to one of Australia's most prestigious amateur golf tournaments (see Did You Know?). It is also one of the best and most authentic seaside links courses in the country.
The more tree-lined front nine (mainly small trees and bushes) gives way to a much more open back nine, where glorious Pacific Ocean views and golf alongside the sand dunes is there to be enjoyed (or if the wind gets up, there to show you who's the real boss in this game - the elements!).
Pot bunkering along the fairways and around the greens is very well done, giving good definition to the holes, which are flatter on the front nine and slightly more undulating on the back-nine.
Around the greens, classic run-offs and slopes encourage bump-and-run approach shots from close-in, and the greens themselves are generally fast and true. There are also a few dangerous water hazards to contend with, not least a small lake that hugs the left side of the par-5 9th.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends (pm).
Must book in advance. Handicap required.
Non-metal spike facility. Walking permitted at all times. Golf carts available for hire.

Women’s (British) Open: the last women’s major championship of the season is hosted by Royal Porthcawl GC. It’s the first time this fabulous seaside links course has hosted the event (July 31-Aug 3).
Walker Cup: the 50th playing of this prestigious men’s amateur event sees the GB&I go head-to-head against the defending USA team at Cypress Point Club, California (Sept 6-7). After that, all eyes turn to Bethpage State Park on Long Island, NY, where the American and defending European professional teams engage in the 45th Ryder Cup (Sept 27-29).
Lottie Woad: 21-year-old Woad burst onto the professional scene in July, with wins in the Women’s Irish Open (as an amateur) and three weeks later in the Women’s Scottish Open (as a professional). She nearly picked-up a major championship, placing third in The Evian in the same month.
Pádraig Harrington: the ever-likeable Irishman added the (British) Senior Open Championship title to his stellar array of tournament successes. His win came on Sunningdale’s spectacular Old Course. Harrington had already bagged the U.S. Senior Open title in June this year.
