Bonnie Doon Golf Club

4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Est. 1897

Bonnie Doon Golf Club: "The Doon" golf club (the third oldest in Sydney) had already built up a formidable history when, in 1947, it came to the present Pagewood site. On an open, undulating area of sandy duneland, a new course was constructed that lived up to the club's illustrious past - Bonnie Doon by name and "beautiful dunes" by nature.

Nowadays, urbanisation has encroached up to the course boundaries (and road and aircraft noise may occasionally be noticed), but the course itself still holds its original charm and provides a good all-round test of your golfing skills. Trees are more abundant these days and narrow down quite a few of the fairways. The greens are firm and well-paced, and bunkering is deployed to excellent visual and ball-swallowing effect - as at the very good par-4 9th hole.

The fairways are presented, like the rest of the course, in tip-top condition, matching the quality of the excellent clubhouse. From the more elevated parts of the course, e.g. at the 8th tee, panoramic views encompass the surrounding suburbs and the more distant Sydney centre skyline.

"The Doon" started life as the Marrickville Golf Club but changed to its current name in 1907, coincident with a move to a new location. A further move to the current location occured in 1947. The club has hosted many top Australian tournaments, including the Australian PGA championship in 1973. Bonnie Doon was the home club of highly acclaimed golfer Daniel Gordon Soutar, who won the Australian Open in 1905 and the Australian PGA Championship in 1905, 1906, 1907 and 1910.

Tournaments

Sony Open in Hawaii: played at Waialae Country Club near Honolulu, the Sony Open takes over the spotlight from The Sentry as the PGA Tour’s calendar-year opening event (Jan 15-18). The Sentry (not being played in 2026) was formerly known as the Tournament of Champions, with a field typically restricted to golfers who won a PGA Tour event in the previous calendar year.

Dubai Desert Classic: the DP World Tour’s first Rolex Series event of 2026, is contested for the 37th time (Jan 22-25). First won by Englishman Mark James in 1989, it now boasts a four-time winner, Rory McIlroy. Played on the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course, this once desert-surrounded course is the long-time flagship for Golf in Dubai.

Our visit last month included two rounds at Golf de Chantilly, one of France’s most prestigious clubs.
It offers two superb layouts: Le Vineuil, a five-star championship course with a rich history, and Longères, an excellent four-star course that provides a strong and enjoyable test.

The wider Paris region offers plenty more. Courses such as Fontainebleau, Golf de Saint-Germain, and several other top-rated layouts make this area one of Europe’s most rewarding golf destinations, offering a mix of woodland, heathland, and parkland designs.
