The Coast Golf Club

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1965

The Coast Golf Club: Although not on every visiting golfer's itinerary, this par-67 layout represents excellent value (and is usually therefore very busy); it also offers the most exciting and dramatic clifftop views of any golf club in the Sydney area. Sometimes 20 feet above the sea, other times 100 feet, the layout has you playing across gaps in the cliffs, hitting alongside them and, from most holes, giving you some wonderful Pacific Ocean photo opportunities. Star of the show is the par-4 14th, a great golf hole with sea and cliff views stretching back to the large, green-roofed clubhouse. Mixed in with many strong holes are one or two slightly weaker stretches. From the 8th, four of the next five holes are par-3's - great if you like playing short holes, and also an opportunity to get some lower scores on your card, before taking on the most testing part of the course. The closing three holes, all challenging par-4's, require precise course management to be safely negotiated. Although The Coast should not be judged on the same quality standards as nearby New South Wales GC, it can certainly deliver the high octane thrills of clifftop golf and some really breathtaking ocean views. Not unlike two of Scotland's lesser known seaside gems - Crail and Elie, in Fife - The Coast may not be in the top echelon of seaside links layouts, but its always fun to play and the views from the course are some of the best around.

Did you know?

The Coast Golf Club is flanked by two other golf clubs at either end - St Michael's GC is the next-door neighbour during the early holes, and Randwick GC later on. Behind the course, the huge, former Prince Henry hospital is being transformed into a modern residential living complex. Best of all though is what's in front of the course - the magnificent Pacific Ocean and its rugged, cliff-lined coastline.
