Yowani
Yowani Country Club: Located 4 km north of Canberra's centre, Yowani provides not just a pleasant parkland golf outing but also comfortable accommodation in an onsite motel. Laid out on relatively flat terrain, the course presents a challenging variety of well-maintained, predominantly tree-lined holes.
Small moguls flank some of the fairways, although it is the tree-line that make things feel relatively tight on several holes. Unnervingly tight might describe the tee-shots at the par-4 14th and returning par-4 15th, which has threatening cross bunkers straddling the fairway.
Both nine-hole loops start with relatively tight, straight par-5s, which head out parallel to each other, separated by a single line of trees. On many occasions, if you miss the correct fairway, there is probably an adjoining one to bail out onto. A good mix of straight and doglegging holes lead you to the often small, circular and not overly elevated greens. A bit of traffic noise can drift in from passing Barton Highway, but nothing that's too distracting.
Noise of a more natural variety may well be encountered at the very good par-3 16th and testing par-4 17th, both of which bring a small lake into play. On an island in the middle of the lake, a sometimes cacophonous bird colony resides.
Note: parts of the course being significantly redeveloped in 2023/24.
Visitors welcome on weekdays (visitors welcome to join the Club's open competitions) and weekends (usually after 3:00pm).
Must book in advance.

Yowani is an aboriginal word meaning “northern place” and Yowani Country Club is situated at the northern gateway to Canberra at the junction of the Barton Highway (from Yass and Melbourne) and the Federal Highway (from Goulburn and Sydney).
Sony Open in Hawaii: played at Waialae Country Club near Honolulu, the Sony Open takes over the spotlight from The Sentry as the PGA Tour’s calendar-year opening event (Jan 15-18). The Sentry (not being played in 2026) was formerly known as the Tournament of Champions, with a field typically restricted to golfers who won a PGA Tour event in the previous calendar year.
Dubai Desert Classic: the DP World Tour’s first Rolex Series event of 2026, is contested for the 37th time (Jan 22-25). First won by Englishman Mark James in 1989, it now boasts a four-time winner, Rory McIlroy. Played on the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course, this once desert-surrounded course is the long-time flagship for Golf in Dubai.
Our visit last month included two rounds at Golf de Chantilly, one of France’s most prestigious clubs.
It offers two superb layouts: Le Vineuil, a five-star championship course with a rich history, and Longères, an excellent four-star course that provides a strong and enjoyable test.
The wider Paris region offers plenty more. Courses such as Fontainebleau, Golf de Saint-Germain, and several other top-rated layouts make this area one of Europe’s most rewarding golf destinations, offering a mix of woodland, heathland, and parkland designs.
The Dutch: "It's no' just a game", as they say in Scotland, and that's certainly true at The Dutch. With 5-star services throughout, a lavishly comfortable Loch Lomond-inspired clubhouse, and a superbly designed and presented golf course, one could not ask for more from this top-end private club.
