Where2Golf says:

Bandon Dunes Golf Resort (Pacific Dunes course): Pacific Dunes is a must for golfers who enjoy the natural rugged splendour of "pure links golf". Here the clock is turned back to before the days of sharp-edged sod-faced bunkers, which are now the norm on Britain and Ireland's top links courses. Pacific Dunes takes you to an era when the beauty of a golf course was embodied in its coastal setting, rustic appearance and rough-hewn features.

From first to last on Pacific Dunes, large irregular-looking bunkers and towering dunes create a high intimidation factor from the tee and around the greens. The hazards (all of the sand variety) resemble natural "scrapes" and "excavations", rather than smooth-lined creations. Flanked by all this natural bunkering, the wide rolling fairways are routed as they were found, creating a timeless golfing landscape. The deceptively fast-paced greens and large slick green surrounds were also mapped onto the terrain's natural contours, without conforming to any specific size or shape.

On this out-and-back layout, one of the show stealers is the short par-3 11th. Hugging the shoreline, as does the par-4 4th and par-4 13th, this wee-demon of a hole, with its cavernous front bunker, is a paragon of rugged beauty. The huge exposed dune at the par-4 13th creates another memorable hole on this fabulous "retro" links course.

If you are not overlooking the ocean, you are probably playing Pacific Dunes' closing four-hole stretch. Here the views are onto another Bandon sibling, the Old Macdonald course. When the wind blows, as it has a habit of doing, don't forget the auld Scottish maxim, "when it's breezy, swing eezy!"

Stay & Play: on-site accommodation is available at Bandon Dunes in a variety of luxury lodges, inns and cottages (see Where2Stay section below).

The first "Mike Keiser" course, Bandon Dunes (1999) was joined in time by its siblings Pacific Dunes (2001), Bandon Trails (2005), Old Macdonald (2010) and the 13-hole par-3 Bandon Preserve (2012). A "retro-links" golf boom followed the success of Bandon Dunes, with the addition of world renowned courses such as Cape Kidnappers and Kauri Cliffs in New Zealand, Barnbougle Dunes and Lost Farm in Tasmania, Cabot Links and Cabot Cliffs in Canada, and Washington state's Chambers Bay.
