Where2Golf says:

Bandon Dunes Golf Resort (Bandon Trails course): The third course built at Bandon Dunes is no less impressive than the two links courses that came before it (Bandon Dunes and Pacific Dunes). Starting and finishing with its siblings amongst the dunes, the Trails course quickly turns inland and is predominantly played in a coastal pine forest. Here Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw crafted a superb golf course, full of linksy overtones but more tree-lined than its siblings.

The first hole of Bandon Trails starts atop a massive sand dune, then wriggles past a couple of smaller dunes to reach the green. The layout quickly traverses a sprawling meadow, before heading into the sloping terrain of the pine forest, eventually emerging back into the dunes at the par-4 18th.

Although ocean views are less frequent, the layout contains many fabulously crafted and scenic holes. The course is enjoyable to walk, although it does have some elevation changes as it ascends up to the highest vantage point at the tee of the short par-4 14th. Whereas the oceanside par-3s often command most attention on its companion courses, Bandon Trails is best characterised by two outstanding par-5s. Both the flattish 9th and uphill 16th are handsomely framed by an interplay of coastal pines, assorted fescues and ground vegetation, and plenty of stylish rustic bunkering. Unusually for a Bandon Dunes course, two water hazards also put in an appearance at the par-4 11th.

Like its siblings, Bandon Trails delivers a dramatic, uplifting and wonderfully natural golf experience. A bit like the inland sections of Cypress Point, the course provides a constant reminder that top-quality "coastal" golf doesn't have to be played directly alongside the beach. A must for visitors to the resort.

Stay & Play: on-site accommodation is available at Bandon Dunes in a variety of luxury lodges, inns and cottages (see Where2Stay section below).

Did you know?

The recent boom in building world-class "retro-links" golf courses arguably took-off on the back of Bandon Dune's undoubted success. Around the golfing world, courses like Cape Kidnappers, Kauri Cliffs, Barnbougle Dunes, Lost Farm, Cabot Links and Cabot Cliffs, Chambers Bay, Arcadia Bluffs and Erin Hills have since become household names. But any such list would be incomplete without recognising Pete Dye's contribution in this area, with courses such as Kiawah Island's Ocean Course (1991) and Whistling Straits (1998), which pre-date all of the above mentioned courses.
