Encinitas Ranch Golf Course

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1998

Encinitas Ranch Golf Course: Less than two miles from the Pacific Ocean and perched up on a small range of hills, Encinitas Ranch is an immensely scenic golf course. Many ocean views are present on the front-nine, while the more dramatic back-nine loop also throws in breathtaking inland panoramas over hills and valleys that stretch as far as the eye can see.

The downhill opening par-4 signals the start of a solid front-nine, where good-width fairways are laid out over relatively open and constantly undulating terrain. Good-quality bunkering is twice joined by threatening water hazards; firstly at the excellent dog-legging par-4 4th and then again protecting the rightside of the par-3 8th.

Although water doesn't feature at all on the back-nine, these are the more interesting and dramatic holes, culminating in a very undulating and scenic stretch, especially as you head towards the finish. Among the most challenging holes, the par-4 16th, requires a blind drive, before the fairway turns and dips down into the green, which is flanked by a small canyon on its left side.

This busy and popular course (especially busy at weekends) may not win top honours for maintenance quality, with the likes of La Costa and Aviara close-by. But it will deliver a rewarding, scenic and challenging round of golf - not least if the wind is blowing through these relatively open and exposed hills.

Tournaments

The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.
