Sun Peaks Resort

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1996

Sun Peaks Resort: Between the months of May and October, Sun Peaks transforms into a full-scale summer mountain resort. During this period the resort's 18-hole championship golf course takes centre stage. As you journey round from tee-to-green, forested hills laced with ski runs, chair lifts and alpine chalets clearly indicate what happens here in winter.

Although the two nine-hole loops stretch east and west along the valley floor from the centre of the village, there is still plenty of elevation change to contend with on both nines. The outward loop of holes flows downhill through the valley, then climbs back up again to the resort centre. Arguably the better views and better holes feature on the more spacious back-nine loop. The course's longest vertical drop at one hole comes at the drivable doglegging par-4 16th. The tee for this most dramatic of plunging downhillers is situated at the layout's highest point, 1,333 metres (4,353 ft) above sea level.

To score well at Sun Peaks you'll need to drive the ball straight, stay out of the trees and avoid the small creeks and ponds that threaten in front of some greens. Length is not the primary golfing challenge at Sun Peaks, a course where wayward "grip-it and rip-it" players may struggle, especially on the tighter, more tree-lined front-nine. At this high altitude you can let the thinner air take care of some of the yardage for you.

Graham Cooke, one of Canada's top designers of the modern era, did an excellent job in designing this attractive and playable layout. But mother nature must get the credit for the quiet mountain setting and the layout's spectacular backdrop. Especially on the back-nine you'll enjoy wonderful views of Mounts Tod, Morrisey and Sundance - all reaching up to over 2,000 m (7,000 ft) above sea level.

Did you know?

Sun Peaks is the highest elevation golf course in British Columbia. The summit of imposing Mt Tod, which towers above the golf course, measures 7,070 feet (2,155 m) above sea level. Tod Mountain (as it is more commonly called) was named after John Tod, one of the most prominent fur traders assigned by the Hudson's Bay Company to the New Caledonia fur district. | Located just 40 minutes drive from Kamloops, Sun Peaks is often 10 degrees cooler in the summer than it is down in the city.
