La Moye Golf Club

5-star: Fabulous – courses don’t get much better than this.

Est. 1902

La Moye Golf Club: played in a stunning duneland area behind Le Braye Beach, La Moye is one of two revered layouts on the island of Jersey. Climbing to 250 feet above sea level, the sublime James Braid layout offers stunning views and a thoroughly testing round of pure links golf.

Whereas the front-nine loop stays relatively close to the modern single-storey clubhouse, the back-nine embarks on a more expansive journey into the dunes. From both nines there are wonderful views to enjoy out across St Ouen's Bay. Excellently maintained and with some recent back-nine tweaks (especially at the par-4 10th and impressive par-4 13th), here you'll find an immensely scenic golfing challenge, worthy of top professionals and aspiring amateurs alike.

Starting with a relatively short par-3 to a domed green, and another par-3 at the 3rd, the layout quickly gets into its natural and scenic stride. The mix of straightaway and doglegging holes are defined by grassy rough, gorse bushes and rolling mounds.

Some testing tee-shots, with longish carries, bring you to pleasantly undulating linksy fairways. Sharp-edged revetted bunkers are clear to see (but harder to stay out of), especially around the large subtly-sloping greens. Here you are also faced with slick run-off areas and plenty to ponder ... do you putt back up the slopes or chip!?

Pick of the holes: although spoilt for choice in this regard, the 12th offers a quintessential bunker-defended links par-3, as handsome as they come. And a word also for the 15 thru' 18 closing stretch. Three par-4s and a par-5, all offering stunning coastal and sea views, as well as a grandstand finish in front of the clubhouse terrace.

Did you know?

La Moye GC traces its beginnings back to a group of golfers, led by local headmaster George Boomer. Having been refused admission to the then elite Royal Jersey Golf Club, George and friends laid out a rudimentary course on the dunes at La Moye, on the other side of the island. The layout was later redesigned by the legendary golfer and course designer, James Braid.

George Boomer's sons Percy and Aubrey, both became successful professional golfers. Aubrey, who played in the first Ryder Cup match in 1927, won the French Open five times, the Dutch Open four times, as well as recording wins in the Belgian and Italian Opens. Percy weighed in with wins in the Belgian, Dutch and Swiss Opens.
