Royal Jersey Golf Club

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1878

Royal Jersey Golf Club: also known as the Grouville Links, Royal Jersey is a stunningly scenic and wonderfully laid out seaside links golf course. It's also Jersey's oldest course, and was home to the great Harry Vardon, six-time Open Championship winner and originator of the famous "Vardon grip".

The rolling layout at Royal Jersey has you playing directly alongside the beach for its opening four holes (with pars of 5-3-5-3). The par-5 1st, with a tee shot over the 18th green, sidles past an interesting mix of forts ancient and modern. Having led you north along the scenic shoreline, the remainder of the front-nine is played at the layout's northern end, furthest from the clubhouse. Here you'll get the best views of Gorey Castle, impressively sitting atop the Mont Orgueil headland. The castle provides a scenic backdrop to several holes.

The back-nine slowly wanders to and fro, exposing you to different wind directions throughout. The par-4 17th and short par-4 18th (with its beachside green), also allow a further close inspection of Fort Henry, which you journeyed past at the first hole.

Although the layout gets a bit compact in places, with a few tightish fairways to navigate, generally there's enough space not to feel too intimidated. Helping your scoring, there's just two par-5s on the (men's) card, with several short par-4s, and five not overly long par-3s (back-to-back at 15 and 16) also in the mix. Several holes are stylishly bunkered, while on other occasions the elevation of the greens provide the challenge. Excellently maintained throughout, this is a links golf course not to be missed.

Did you know?

Royal Jersey is one of two golf clubs in the Channel Islands honoured by exercise of the Sovereign's royal prerogative. The Royal titles were conferred on Royal Jersey (1879) and Royal Guernsey (1891) by Queen Victoria.

Two scenic highlights to enjoy during your round are Fort Henry (built in 1758), alongside which the par-5 1st and par-4 17th play. Gorey Castle, also known as the Old Castle, is perched a kilometre from the course on a headland known as Mont Orgueil.

Legendary professional golfer, writer and course designer Harry Vardon, grew up in Grouville, where he developed his golfing skills at Royal Jersey GC. His six wins in The Open Championship has not been bettered, even by the other two members of "The Great Triumvirate", James Braid and J.H. Taylor ... who won five Opens apiece. Between 1894 and 1914 these three golfers won 16 of the 21 Opens played.

Tournaments

Sony Open in Hawaii: played at Waialae Country Club near Honolulu, the Sony Open takes over the spotlight from The Sentry as the PGA Tour’s calendar-year opening event (Jan 15-18). The Sentry (not being played in 2026) was formerly known as the Tournament of Champions, with a field typically restricted to golfers who won a PGA Tour event in the previous calendar year.

Dubai Desert Classic: the DP World Tour’s first Rolex Series event of 2026, is contested for the 37th time (Jan 22-25). First won by Englishman Mark James in 1989, it now boasts a four-time winner, Rory McIlroy. Played on the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course, this once desert-surrounded course is the long-time flagship for Golf in Dubai.

Our visit last month included two rounds at Golf de Chantilly, one of France’s most prestigious clubs.
It offers two superb layouts: Le Vineuil, a five-star championship course with a rich history, and Longères, an excellent four-star course that provides a strong and enjoyable test.

The wider Paris region offers plenty more. Courses such as Fontainebleau, Golf de Saint-Germain, and several other top-rated layouts make this area one of Europe’s most rewarding golf destinations, offering a mix of woodland, heathland, and parkland designs.

The Dutch: "It's no' just a game", as they say in Scotland, and that's certainly true at The Dutch. With 5-star services throughout, a lavishly comfortable Loch Lomond-inspired clubhouse, and a superbly designed and presented golf course, one could not ask for more from this top-end private club.
