The Stone Quarry course at Mission Hills, Haikou is a fun course, crafted as a tribute to the many fine courses of Pete Dye, mentor to the Schmidt-Curley team. The layout not only amplifies many of the "wild-ride" features associated with Pete Dye designs, it also highlights former stone quarrying activity in this area.
Railroad tie sleepers, abrupt mounds and moguls, long sandy waste areas, mischievously small greens and rail-road car bridges all pay homage to the distinctive look created by the legendary golf architect from Ohio. These Dye-design clichés become all the more dramatic as the course snakes its way through ancient volcanic quarries.
The dramatic landscape, often defined by steep rock walls, features remnants of former quarrying activity. As if abandoned in haste, coal cars, railroad tracks and abandoned mining equipment lie scattered around. At just over 6,000 yards from the tips, and with a par of 70, the course demands quality shot-making versus brute strength. For some this will provide a welcome alternative to the resort's longer and lustier courses.
Mission Hills Haikou, home to no less than 10 golf courses, is one of the world's largest golf clubs (if not the largest). The courses range in size and stature from the highly-acclaimed Blackstone tournament and Lava Fields layouts, down to the more modestly-sized Stepping Stone and Double Pin executive courses.

Schmidt-Curley Design, and principally Brian Curley, laid out and built all ten layouts at Mission Hills Haikou on Hainan Island. The firm was also responsible for crafting ten of the 12 courses at the "World’s Largest Golf Club," namely the Mission Hills Golf Club in Guangdong province (formerly Canton). The 12 courses are spread between three closely grouped locations, midway between Shenzhen and Dongguan.
Co-founders of Schmidt-Curley, Lee Schmidt and Brian Curley, both worked alongside Pete Dye for several years. Recognition for their work includes consistently high rankings for many of their courses, and acknowledgement as one of the world’s “most influential” course design companies of the recent era.
