Hong Kong Golf Club, Fanling (Old course)

4-star: generally an excellent standard golf course, well worth visiting.
Hong Kong Golf Club, Fanling (Old course) Est. 1899

Where2Golf says:

The renowned Hong Kong Golf Club at Fanling offers three well-regarded and attractive 18-hole layouts, namely the Old, New and Eden courses. These mainly tree-lined parkland layouts each deliver plenty of golfing challenge, combined with many attractive features and excellent upkeep.

The venerable Old course, in existence since 1919, is relatively short at just under 6,250 yards from the tips. The front-nine weaves its way through tree-lined fairways to the turn, saving some of its best holes for the inward nine. A seriously bunker-defended final green awaits at the par-4 18th ("Home"). This classic out-and-back layout features tree-lined fairways and small greens, placing a premium on accuracy rather than length.

Stay & Play at Hong Kong GC, Fanling: onsite accommodation is available for international visitors, subject to approval from the General Manager (see Where2Stay section below).

Did you know?

Queen Victoria conferred the Royal prefix on the Hong Kong Golf Club in its founding year (1889). At its 1996 Annual General Meeting, the club resolved to drop the Royal title, ahead of the transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong from the United Kingdom to the People's Republic of China in 1997.

The club originally played in Happy Valley, a location shared with many other activities. As the club expanded, the need for a more permanent home was addressed with the building of a small nine hole course at Deep Water Bay, before the club eventually moved to its current location in Fanling. It has been the home of the Hong Kong Open since the event's inauguration in 1959 (see our Tournaments section >by Venue >Hong Kong GC).
