About the course

  • The Course:

18 holes. Mainly open parkland. Gently undulating terrain - a few slopes to climb.

  • Surroundings:

Seaside location directly alongside Alnmouth Bay (North Sea).

  • Designer:

Alnmouth Village GC (nine-hole): laid out by Mungo Park (1869).
Alnmouth GC (18-hole): nine of the 18 holes were originally laid out by Willie Park Jr (1905), as an extension to his uncle's nine-hole layout of 1869. These 1905-designed holes were subsequently absorbed into the "new" 18-hole Alnmouth (Foxton Hall) course, which was designed by English course architect Harry Colt (1930). Modifications made by Philip MacKenzie Ross (post-WW2).

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1869

Alnmouth Golf Club: although now separate entities, the two Alnmouth golf clubs (18-hole Alnmouth GC and nine-hole Alnmouth Village GC) have the same antecedents. Both originated on the Mungo Park-designed "village" course (1869), England's fourth oldest golf course. In 1905 this "old" or "village" course was extended to 18 holes by Mungo's uncle, Willie Park Jr.

In 1931 Alnmouth's members, tired of sharing their course with non-golfing day-trippers and holidaymakers, moved away to a quieter location. They formed a separate club at Foxton Hall, just a stone's throw away. With them came the nine holes designed by Willie Park Jr in 1905, which were integrated into an 18-hole layout with nine new holes designed by the legendary course architect Harry Colt.

Alnmouth Golf Club, known locally as "Foxton," is home to an 18-hole seaside course, which opened for play in 1931. This predominantly open parkland layout will test most facets of your game, ensuring a round with plenty of enjoyable golfing challenges ... and magnificent North Sea vistas.

Alnmouth Village Golf Club: sitting above the mouth of the River Aln is where you'll find the original Mungo Park-designed 1869 course. It's England's oldest nine-hole course, and fourth oldest course overall. This historic golf terrain winds through natural dunes and coastal heathland. Like its younger 18-hole sibling (a mile away at Foxton Hall), it offers stunning views onto Alnmouth Beach and the North Sea beyond.

Stay&Play at Alnmouth Golf Club (Foxton Hall): onsite "dormy" accommodation available, see Where2Stay section below.

Did you know?

Alnmouth GC's original 9-hole course, dating from 1869, is now part of a separate entity called Alnmouth Village GC. A newer 18-hole course (opened in 1931), is now the home of Alnmouth GC, located at nearby Foxton Hall.

Fourth oldest club in England: Alnmouth has a long and distinguished history, and lays claim to being the fourth oldest golf club in England, dating back to 1869. The five oldest golf clubs in England are generally considered to be: Royal Blackheath (1766 ... although they say 1608); Royal North Devon (1864); London Scottish GC (1865); Alnmouth GC (1869) and Royal Liverpool (1869). (Old Manchester GC, originally Manchester GC, has had a stop-start history since 1818).

Fourth oldest course in England: the Alnmouth Village GC nine-hole course (1869) is reputedly the fourth oldest golf course in England. In terms of longevity, it sits behind Royal North Devon (1864), London Scottish/Wimbledon Common (1865), and Bramshaw (Forest course) (1865). Also dating from 1869 are the courses of Royal Liverpool GC, and Royston GC in Hertfordshire.

One of Alnmouth Golf Club’s unique features is its onsite accommodation. The Dormy House occupies the first floor of the clubhouse with room for up to 26 guests. There is very little Dormy House accommodation left amongst English golf clubs, so Alnmouth upholds a uniquely British tradition.

Sony Open in Hawaii: played at Waialae Country Club near Honolulu, the Sony Open takes over the spotlight from The Sentry as the PGA Tour’s calendar-year opening event (Jan 15-18). The Sentry (not being played in 2026) was formerly known as the Tournament of Champions, with a field typically restricted to golfers who won a PGA Tour event in the previous calendar year.

Dubai Desert Classic: the DP World Tour’s first Rolex Series event of 2026, is contested for the 37th time (Jan 22-25). First won by Englishman Mark James in 1989, it now boasts a four-time winner, Rory McIlroy. Played on the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course, this once desert-surrounded course is the long-time flagship for Golf in Dubai.

It offers two superb layouts: Le Vineuil, a five-star championship course with a rich history, and Longères, an excellent four-star course that provides a strong and enjoyable test.

The wider Paris region offers plenty more. Courses such as Fontainebleau, Golf de Saint-Germain, and several other top-rated layouts make this area one of Europe’s most rewarding golf destinations, offering a mix of woodland, heathland, and parkland designs.
