Appleby
Appleby Golf Club is home to a course that expansively rolls across the open terrain of Brackenber Moor. The out-and-back layout offers many fine views across to the Lake District in the west, and the North Pennines to the east.
At just under 6,000 yards from the tips, there's quite a few short par-4s to take advantage of. The layout is not overly tiring to walk, with many holes played on flatter terrain, and others embracing a modicum of elevation change. Openness and stunning scenery are the hallmarks of this enjoyable moorland layout.
Grazing sheep do a fine job of keeping the good-width fairways and second cut of rough nicely trimmed. A ring of electrified fencing steers them off the well-kept but relatively slow greens. Around the greens you'll often find small pot bunkers, as well as an assortment of bumps, ridges and hollows.
Complementing a few less interesting holes, you'll also find some gems like the 7th (Mell Fell). This doglegging par-4 plays over a dry-stone wall before climbing quite a slope to a blind green, from where another long-range panorama can be enjoyed.
Pick of the holes: there can only be one candidate here. The incredible par-3 15th (Bell Hole) is as fun and tough a par-3 as they come. Take plenty of club as you hit up and over Hilton Beck (a deep stream) towards the blind coffin-like green ... a masterpiece of golf design!

The original Appleby Golf Club club was founded in 1894; its members played on a course on Minsceugh Moor on the Colby side of the town. In 1903 the present club was founded, with its course laid out on the present Brackenber Moor site.
The nearby town of Appleby is the county town of the historic county of Westmorland. In 1975 the name was changed to Appleby-in-Westmorland, to retain the old county name. The name Appleby derives from Old English, and simply means "settlement with apple trees".
