Beaverbrook (Golf Club): Laid out in the former Cherkley Court estate of former newspaper magnate Lord Beaverbrook, the newly arrived eponymous golf course is certainly making a name for itself. But there is plenty more to this prestigious new venue than golf. Beaverbrook boasts a palatial onsite hotel, the Coach House Health Club & Spa, three contrasting restaurants and a cookery school ... where you can test and develop your culinary skills.
With a David McLay-Kidd/Tom Watson designed 18-hole championship course, this private facility offers a top-end golf experience to its members and guests staying at the luxury onsite hotel. The pleasantly undulating and relatively open course plays to over 7,000 yards from the Watson tees, a more modest 5,900 yards from the Churchill tees, and just over 5,000 yards from the forward Kipling tees. From both the golf course and the stately mansion, there are abundant views over the wonderfully wooded Surrey countryside and further afield towards London.
Private club; guests may only play if hosted by a member, or staying at the onsite hotel.
Players generally walk this course. Caddies available if pre-booked.

Cherkley Court was the former home of newspaper magnate Max Aitken, 1st Baron Beaverbrook, who built the UK's Daily Express into the most successful mass circulation newspaper in the world. In his later years he also owned and ran the London Evening Standard and the Sunday Express. During World War II, Lord Beaverbrook was appointed as Churchill's Minister of Aircraft Production. It was said that if Winston Churchill was Britain’s bulldog, then Lord Beaverbrook, via his newspapers, was surely its bark!

Visit websiteWith views across the 470 acre estate, each one of three exquisite buildings at Beaverbrook is home to rooms that radiate charm and character. You can stay in the wonderfully cosy Cottage at The Garden House, enjoy spectacular views from the Coach House, or lose yourself in opulent suites in The House, where you can let history envelope you in Churchill’s bedroom. Three restaurants create fabulously diverse menus using seasonal ingredients, some of which are grown just yards from the kitchens.

Sony Open in Hawaii: played at Waialae Country Club near Honolulu, the Sony Open takes over the spotlight from The Sentry as the PGA Tour’s calendar-year opening event (Jan 15-18). The Sentry (not being played in 2026) was formerly known as the Tournament of Champions, with a field typically restricted to golfers who won a PGA Tour event in the previous calendar year.
Dubai Desert Classic: the DP World Tour’s first Rolex Series event of 2026, is contested for the 37th time (Jan 22-25). First won by Englishman Mark James in 1989, it now boasts a four-time winner, Rory McIlroy. Played on the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course, this once desert-surrounded course is the long-time flagship for Golf in Dubai.
Our visit last month included two rounds at Golf de Chantilly, one of France’s most prestigious clubs.
It offers two superb layouts: Le Vineuil, a five-star championship course with a rich history, and Longères, an excellent four-star course that provides a strong and enjoyable test.
The wider Paris region offers plenty more. Courses such as Fontainebleau, Golf de Saint-Germain, and several other top-rated layouts make this area one of Europe’s most rewarding golf destinations, offering a mix of woodland, heathland, and parkland designs.
The Dutch: "It's no' just a game", as they say in Scotland, and that's certainly true at The Dutch. With 5-star services throughout, a lavishly comfortable Loch Lomond-inspired clubhouse, and a superbly designed and presented golf course, one could not ask for more from this top-end private club.
