Bowood, Wilts
Bowood Hotel, Spa & Golf Resort is home to the official PGA Golf Course and Golf Academy for the South West of England. Here you will find a relatively modern and open 18-hole championship golf course, laid out in the grounds of the historic Bowood Estate - home of the Marquis and Marchioness of Lansdowne.
The Estate's naturally undulating contours, complemented by the addition of many mounds and hollows, has produced a layout comprising well-defined golf holes and plenty of golfing challenge. From the tee you look onto relatively generous fairways, flanked by an array of clear to see hazards.
The large and often two-tier greens are heavily defended by substantive bunkering, with water also to be avoided on a couple of holes. From the course you enjoy many fine views onto the surrounding rural countryside. In the distance on the rolling Wiltshire Downs, sits one of many white horse carvings to be found on the hills of the South of England.
Stay&Play at Bowood: luxury onsite accommodation available, see Where2Stay section below.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and after 11am on weekends.
Must book in advance. Handicap required.
Players generally walk this course. Golf carts available for hire.

The Bowood Estate was bought in 1754 by John Petty, 1st Earl of Shelburne, who rebuilt the mansion house. One of England’s finest Georgian houses, you can explore the family Library and Chapel, the room where Joseph Priestley discovered oxygen in 1774, the Sculpture Gallery, the Orangery and a range of exhibition rooms. Nearly 300 years of artefacts and antiques from the family history are on display.

Walker Cup: the 50th playing of this prestigious men’s amateur event sees the GB&I go head-to-head against the defending USA team at Cypress Point Club, California (Sept 6-7). After that, all eyes turn to Bethpage State Park on Long Island, NY, where the American and defending European professional teams engage in the 45th Ryder Cup (Sept 27-29).
Lottie Woad: 21-year-old Woad burst onto the professional scene in July, with wins in the Women’s Irish Open (as an amateur) and three weeks later in the Women’s Scottish Open (as a professional). She nearly picked-up a major championship, placing third in The Evian in the same month.
Pádraig Harrington: the ever-likeable Irishman added the (British) Senior Open Championship title to his stellar array of tournament successes. His win came on Sunningdale’s spectacular Old Course. Harrington had already bagged the U.S. Senior Open title in June this year.
