Centurion Club

Private: A course for members and their invited guests only.

Est. 2013

Centurion Club is home to a big, expansive championship golf course. For much of the time the layout roams across a large area of undulating open parkland, where large grassy mounds trimmed with gorse bushes give a distinctly linksy feel to proceedings.

This relative newcomer to the high-end golfing scene in the south of England, will thoroughly test amateurs and professionals alike. Setting off from an elevated tee, the right-to-left doglegging par-4 1st may give the impression that tightish tree-lined holes are the norm for this layout. Not so. After the par-4th, which links the two halves of the course (as does its neighbour, the returning par-3 14th), the rest of the design occupies largely open undulating parkland. Plenty of elevation change, stylish bunkering, large grassy mounds and Simon Gidman's excellent golfing challenges, all add up to a thoroughly enjoyable golfing test.

Neat square-cut teeing grounds, fast-paced and excellent greens (with plenty of bunkering and run-off areas around), are all part of the excellent presentation of this well-crafted big-dimension design. The only negative, is the almost constant drone of traffic noise from the M1, one of the UK's busiest motorways.

Pick of the holes: among many memorable holes, the par4 12th plays downhill from one of many elevated tees. After a good drive down the hill, you're left with a testing approach to a wide (but not particularly deep) green, fronted by a stone walled pond. The pond and stone wall theme returns on the leftside of the par-3 17th and rightside of the par-5 risk-reward 18th.

Limited access: this is a private golf course, generally playable only by members and their invited guests.

Tournaments

Sony Open in Hawaii: played at Waialae Country Club near Honolulu, the Sony Open takes over the spotlight from The Sentry as the PGA Tour’s calendar-year opening event (Jan 15-18). The Sentry (not being played in 2026) was formerly known as the Tournament of Champions, with a field typically restricted to golfers who won a PGA Tour event in the previous calendar year.

Dubai Desert Classic: the DP World Tour’s first Rolex Series event of 2026, is contested for the 37th time (Jan 22-25). First won by Englishman Mark James in 1989, it now boasts a four-time winner, Rory McIlroy. Played on the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course, this once desert-surrounded course is the long-time flagship for Golf in Dubai.

Our visit last month included two rounds at Golf de Chantilly, one of France’s most prestigious clubs.
It offers two superb layouts: Le Vineuil, a five-star championship course with a rich history, and Longères, an excellent four-star course that provides a strong and enjoyable test.

The wider Paris region offers plenty more. Courses such as Fontainebleau, Golf de Saint-Germain, and several other top-rated layouts make this area one of Europe’s most rewarding golf destinations, offering a mix of woodland, heathland, and parkland designs.

The Dutch GC, The Netherlands

The Dutch: "It's no' just a game", as they say in Scotland, and that's certainly true at The Dutch. With 5-star services throughout, a lavishly comfortable Loch Lomond-inspired clubhouse, and a superbly designed and presented golf course, one could not ask for more from this top-end private club.

Join us at The Dutch from August 21–24 for the Festival of Golf, featuring the HotelPlanner Tour. Experience four days of top-tier sport, live music, incredible food, and unexpected surprises.
