Flempton Golf Club is located just a few miles from another renowned and historically important nine-hole course ... Royal Worlington & Newmarket, aka "Mildenhall". Here at Flempton the nine well-crafted and strongly bunker-defended holes are different in character, but no less enjoyable to play.
Laid out over relatively flat, sandy heathland terrain, and comprising a trio of three-hole loops, the course never strays too far from the clubhouse. Lightly tree-lined good-width fairways, with occasional gorse bushes threateningly scattered around, lead you to the often well-defended greens. The predominantly clear to see bunkering (fairway and greenside), as well as grassy mounding, plays a key role in the course's defences. The good-sized greens are home to many subtle slopes.
If you're in the area to play at Royal Worlington or the excellent 18-hole course at Thetford Golf Club, you'll not be disappointed if you add Flempton to your itinerary.
Pick of the holes: of the two par-3s (at 5 and 9), the 5th hole brings water menacingly into play, with two ditches to cross and a small pond lurking on the green's left side. However, our favourite hole was the short straightaway par-4 7th. Here you play to a "hidden" green that's surrounded by a posse of equally hidden bunkers.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends.
