Fulford Golf Club: Although not as renowned as some of the moorland courses located 20 miles away just north of Leeds, Fulford nonetheless provides a very satisfying golf outing in pleasant rural surroundings.
Laid out over flattish terrain, there are more than a few occasions when the course takes on the character of the Alister MacKenzie designed heathland courses around Leeds. In contrast, there are also several holes giving a more wooded parkland feel, especially with a fine array of birch, pine and oak lining some fairways.
The first five and last five holes on this out-and-back layout are located on the northside of the A64 (York ring road), the middle eight on the south side. Apart from a footbridge that gets you over the road, the course is in all respects a seamless continuation of excellent quality holes. The road itself will not disturb or interefere with your round one jot. A special mention must be made of Fulford's top quality greens, as good as you'll find among the many great courses in the north of England.
Visitors welcome on weekdays; no outside visitors on weekends (although exceptionally on Sunday afternoons).
Must book in advance. Handicap required.
Cash or UK cheque only. Contact club for full details, discounts, packages, etc. [Last updated: 2019].
Soft spikes only. Players generally walk this course.

Women's British Open venue: 1976 (winner: Jennifer Lee-Smith). In the 1970s and 80s Fulford regularly hosted the European Tour's Benson & Hedges International Open Championship. In the 1981 B&H International, Bernhard Langer was required to climbed up into the big oak tree to the left of the 17th green to play his third shot. The "Langer Tree" now bears a plaque to mark Bernhard's endeavours.
