Goodwood (Downs)
Golf at Goodwood (Downs course): The remarkable sporting estate of Goodwood, where horse-racing, motorsport, flying and shooting can all be indulged, also offers two top-quality 18-hole golf courses, the Downs and Park. These private members' courses can be accessed by visitors who stay at the luxury onsite hotel, or who sign-up for a Goodwood Golf Experience package.
The Downs, the highest rated of Goodwood's courses, was originally laid out in 1914 by James Braid, and renovated in 2006. The layout opens with a relatively short par-3, then proceeds through a valley-like setting, where invention was key to the design. The par-4 2nd and 3rd holes need precision from the tee ... local knowledge may come in handy. Elevated crow's nest teeing grounds are the feature of 4, 5 and 6.
With the first six done and dusted, there's quite a climb up to the par-4 7th tee, at which point the full majesty of the downland experience unfolds, and the course's legendary views are readily apparent. The ensuing 10 holes (from 7 thru' 16) are all played in a wonderfully open Sussex Downs setting, with views over Chichester, the English Channel and, in the distance, the Isle of Wight.
With refreshments taken at the halfway house (after the 7th green), you can settle-down to some blissfully scenic downland golf. It's here where the best of the layout's holes were crafted. Many make ample use of the undulating, easy-draining terrain, while giving you considerably more "elbow room" than in the opening and closing parkland stretches.
Variety is clearly a key ingredient of the Downs course. Not just the contrast between the opening parkland six and ensuing downland majority, but also in the crafting of the holes and use of the elevation changes.
Pick of the holes: the downhill par-3 12th plays to a stylishly bunker-encircled green, where bunkers front and back loom large as you stand on the tee.
Stay&Play at Goodwood: luxury onsite accommodation available, see Where2Stay section below.
Outside visitor play is possible on Goodwood's Downs and Park courses as a resident at the onsite hotel, or on a Golf Experience package.
Must book in advance.
Players generally walk this course. Interestingly styled golf carts available for hire (and included with the Golf Experience package). The Downs course clubhouse is located at The Kennels. A halfway house (where meals can taken) is located at the heart of the course just after the 7th and 15th greens.
Good
Golf at the Goodwood Club dates back more than a century, when in 1901 the Duke of Richmond commissioned a course to be laid out by champion golfer and eminent designer, James Braid.
The Downs golf course clubhouse, and central clubhouse for all of Goodwood Estate's members, is located at The Kennels. Known as the "world's most luxurious dog house" when it was built in 1787, The Kennels was commissioned by the third Duke of Richmond. Architect James Wyatt was tasked with creating the most magnificent kennels ever built.
Set in 12,000 acres of rolling Sussex Downland, Goodwood has long been famous for both its natural beauty and its legendary hospitality. The home of the Dukes of Richmond for over 300 years, Goodwood House, designed by James Wyatt, contains one of the finest collections of English paintings and French porcelain and furniture in England.
Goodwood enjoys an exceptional variety and unique mixture of activities, ranging from horseracing, motor racing, flying, golf and shooting. It also has a luxury onsite hotel, The Goodwood Hotel (see Where2Stay below).
