Halifax Golf Club

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1895

Halifax Golf Club: set within the dramatic open landscape of the Ogden Valley in West Yorkshire, this rugged moorland gem is revered by golf aficionados as a true northern gem. Hard to argue with that. Open rugged moorland and a dramatic landscape are here in abundance. So too, a very enjoyable well-crafted golf course.

Established in 1895, the course was designed by prolific golf course architect and five-time Open champion James Braid. Overcoming the difficulties of the undulating moorland terrain, Braid's layout throws down a fair and challenging test of golf.

Grazing sheep are often a feature of moorland courses. Here at Halifax they are also much in evidence. But they munch away outside the course boundaries on the upper slopes of a wide and dramatic valley ... the first eleven holes occupy the lower slopes, which gradually climb towards the head of the valley.

A change of scene arrives at the 12th. Here a blind short par-4 (from the medal tees), or a more straightforward par-3 from the forward and ladies' tees, brings you to the layout's upper plateau, where holes 13 thru' 16 are located. Needless to say, the views are even further reaching up on this plateau.

Pick of the holes: the 17th (Baggot's Leap) is a memorable plunging downhill par-3 (176 yards). It offers, as much of the course does, fine views onto the South Pennines, tempered with a tee shot that needs your full attention ... and perhaps a soupçon of local knowledge!

Halifax Golf Club's crest is taken directly from the Coat of Arms of the town of Halifax. In the centre of the crest is a depiction of St John the Baptist, the "holy face" (haleg-fax) from which Halifax's name is derived.

Running through Halifax golf course are two streams ... Carrs Beck and Middle Grain Beck, which both flow into Hebble Brook. In turn, the brook flows through Halifax town (mainly out of sight and/or underground), en route to the River Calder.

Halifax GC is located 4 miles NW of the town of Halifax, once a thriving mill town heavily involved in the woollen industry. Based on its strong industrial heritage, Halifax, Calderdale's largest town, is home to several buildings displaying impressive Victorian architecture. The ornate town hall was designed by Sir Charles Barry (1860, his last major commission); he also designed the Houses of Parliament in London (1840s).
