Mullion Golf Club

Unrated: Well regarded course not yet visited by the Where2Golf team.

Est. 1895

Mullion Golf Club: located on the cliffs of the Lizard Peninsula and framed by sandy coves and protected reed beds, here you'll find England's most southerly golf course .... immensely scenic and at times equally quirky. Rarely closed for bad weather, this challenging clifftop course is made even more so if the wind is blowing.

The out-and-back layout traverses the open terrain, with barely a tree on the course. The undulating fairways and good-sized greens have been suitably laced with plenty of saucer-shaped bunkering. There's a couple of criss-crossing holes en route, starting with the long par-3 1st, which plays over the par-4 2nd and 18th fairways.

List of courses: England - South West

Did you know?

The village of Mullion, which sits just inland from the coast, is the largest village on the Lizard peninsula. Two river valleys run southwest from the village, steeply descending into the sea at Polurrian Cove and Mullion Cove. Regarded as one of the prettiest coves in Cornwall, the small harbour at Mullion Cove was formerly the centre of the village's pilchard fishing industry.

Women’s (British) Open: the last women’s major championship of the season is hosted by Royal Porthcawl GC. It’s the first time this fabulous seaside links course has hosted the event (July 31-Aug 3).

Walker Cup: the 50th playing of this prestigious men’s amateur event sees the GB&I go head-to-head against the defending USA team at Cypress Point Club, California (Sept 6-7).

After that, all eyes turn to Bethpage State Park on Long Island, NY, where the American and defending European professional teams engage in the 45th Ryder Cup (Sept 27-29).

Who's Who

Lottie Woad: 21-year-old Woad burst onto the professional scene in July, with wins in the Women’s Irish Open (as an amateur) and three weeks later in the Women’s Scottish Open (as a professional). She nearly picked-up a major championship, placing third in The Evian in the same month.

Pádraig Harrington: the ever-likeable Irishman added the (British) Senior Open Championship title to his stellar array of tournament successes. His win came on Sunningdale’s spectacular Old Course. Harrington had already bagged the U.S. Senior Open title in June this year.
