From the A61 / A658 roundabout just south of Harrogate, follow the A61, direction Harrogate centre. After approx 1 mile, at traffic lights, turn right into Follifoot Road. After 100 yards golf is on your right, parking on your left.
Pannal Golf Club: If Lancashire can boast a fabulous array of links golf courses close to the sea, then neighbouring Yorkshire has an equally good collection of wonderful inland courses. Pannal is a strong contender to top the list of the county's "lesser known gems".
Located just south of Harrogate, this wonderfully absorbing and well-presented heathland course is blessed with an excellent layout and superb views from many holes. From the early holes the magnificent Crimple Valley viaduct comes into view, although the best view of it is seen later, from the 17th green.
Initially the course winds its way up the side of the valley bringing you to a flatter part of the course where many excellently tree-lined holes are blended in with more open moorland holes. Through these more open stretches, heather, gorse and grassy rough define the holes, at other times birch and pine trees provide the line.
Some tee shots will feel a little tight, on other occasions, as at the glorious par-5 4th, there seems enough room to give the driver a whang and try to make the green in two. Water doesn't come into play here at Pannal, not even at the excellent collection of par-3s, but elevation changes and solid bunkering combine with the various flora to keep you on your toes.
The round closes with another challenging drive at the downhill par-4 18th, and an approach to one of many flattish, well-bunkered greens, that you'll have realised are home to many mysterious slopes and borrows.

Pannal Golf Club has a long history of hosting top level competitions, including the English Women's Championship in 1927, the British Youth's Championship in 1975 (won by Nick Faldo), the PGA Seniors' Championship in 1985 (won by Neil Coles), and the Ladies' British Amateur in 1991 (won by Valerie Michaud of France). It is also a regional qualifying course for The Open Championship.
An extraordinary story told in the golf club, concerns a young club member who attempted to cross the Crimple Valley viaduct by bicycle. Half way across he heard a train coming. Realising he couldn't make it across, he clung onto the side of the viaduct wall as the train rumbled past. With bicycle in hand he unfortunately lost his grip and fell. How he survived a fall from such height is beyond many people's comprehension. The fact that he won the club's 36-hole championship just two years later is the happy ending to this tale.
