Portal Golf Club (Premier course): Two absorbing 18-hole courses, a nine-holer, and onsite accommodation are on offer here at Portal. The Championship course, located alongside the hotel, is longer than the Premier course, which is located just under a mile away. Both courses boast fabulous views over the surrounding Cheshire countryside; Beeston Castle, Jodrell Bank as well as a host of other counties are all in view. The views though are where the likeness between Portal's two offerings stop.
The parkland Premier course, partly open and partly tree-lined, is justly famous for its magnificent views over surrounding Cheshire, and also away to Staffordshire, Derbyshire and the distant hill line of Cannock Chase. On the course, very good use is made of the undulating terrain (and Roman excavations - see Did You Know?).
The driving lines here are often quite tight, with thick rough often awaiting stray shots. The closing stretch of four holes, alternating par-3s and par-5s, provides a fitting end to a very pleasant and scenic layout. Is this better than the more society-oriented Championship course? You decide ... we liked them both.

Good
This is a great course to play with one of the more knowledgeable members. They will point out the many examples of ancient Roman activity strewn around this course, activity that pre-dates the golf by perhaps 1,500 years. There are walls (as at the 7th green) and ponds (in the middle of the 10th fairway), which are remnants of the Roman stone-quarrying that supplied the basic materials from which the ancient city of Chester was first built. Masons' marks are still inscribed in some of the stones. Alongside the 8th hole (left-side) is an old Roman road.
