Pyrford Lakes Golf Club (formerly called Pyrford Golf Club): of the many new golf courses developed around London in the 1990s, Pyrford Lakes is definitely one of the most quiet and pleasing. It is also one of the most challenging, especially if your game trembles at the presence of water.
The holes here, laid out in two nine hole loops to the north and south of the clubhouse, occupy a predominantly open parkland environment. Good definition is given to the holes by landscaped mounding, small trees and bushes, good bunkering, and an abundance of water hazards. The generally fast and sloping greens provide an excellent examination of your skills with the short stick.
Quietly located beside the River Wey Navigation (canal), Pyrford Lakes offers a good test of your golfing skills, as challenging as its neighbour on the other side of the canal, the prestigious and private golf course of The Wisley. On such a busy course as Pyrford Lakes, the occasional signs of heavy golfing traffic may be evident.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and after 11am on weekends.
Must book in advance. Handicap required.

Players generally walk this course. Golf carts available for hire (best to book in advance).

Running alongside Pyrford Lakes Golf Club is the River Wey Navigation (canal). Over 350 years ago, in 1653, the River Wey became the first British river to be successfully canalised for commercial traffic. The River Wey Navigation, combined with the younger Godalming Navigation which extended further southward, brought prosperity not only to the towns of Guildford and Godalming, but also this whole region of west Surrey and north Hampshire.
The Wey Navigation runs from Town Bridge in the centre of Guildford up to the River Thames at Weybridge. On the other side of the Navigation canal is The Wisley Golf Club.
Pyrford is pronounced "purr-ford" (the sound of the cat!), rather than "pire-ford".

Visit websiteThe Oatlands Park Hotel offers 144 guest rooms in a once privately owned historic country house that became a hotel in 1856. Set amidst the manicured gardens, the hotel offers a quiet retreat as well as top-quality facilities. The hotel stands on the site of the grand Royal Palaces of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. The great cedar tree at the front of the hotel was planted by Charles I to celebrate the birth of his son, Henry of Otelands.

Sony Open in Hawaii: played at Waialae Country Club near Honolulu, the Sony Open takes over the spotlight from The Sentry as the PGA Tour’s calendar-year opening event (Jan 15-18). The Sentry (not being played in 2026) was formerly known as the Tournament of Champions, with a field typically restricted to golfers who won a PGA Tour event in the previous calendar year.
Dubai Desert Classic: the DP World Tour’s first Rolex Series event of 2026, is contested for the 37th time (Jan 22-25). First won by Englishman Mark James in 1989, it now boasts a four-time winner, Rory McIlroy. Played on the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course, this once desert-surrounded course is the long-time flagship for Golf in Dubai.
Our visit last month included two rounds at Golf de Chantilly, one of France’s most prestigious clubs.
It offers two superb layouts: Le Vineuil, a five-star championship course with a rich history, and Longères, an excellent four-star course that provides a strong and enjoyable test.
The wider Paris region offers plenty more. Courses such as Fontainebleau, Golf de Saint-Germain, and several other top-rated layouts make this area one of Europe’s most rewarding golf destinations, offering a mix of woodland, heathland, and parkland designs.
The Dutch: "It's no' just a game", as they say in Scotland, and that's certainly true at The Dutch. With 5-star services throughout, a lavishly comfortable Loch Lomond-inspired clubhouse, and a superbly designed and presented golf course, one could not ask for more from this top-end private club.
