Stoneham Golf Club

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1909

Stoneham Golf Club is home to another in a long line of fine heathland-parkland golf courses in the south of England. It occupies a pleasant woodland setting, with undulating terrain bestowing on every hole its own special character. Out of the 18 holes there is not one bad one - all are skilfully crafted gems.

The long downhill par-4 4th is perhaps one of Stoneham's best - your drive from the tee requires a longish carry over heather to a downhill sloping fairway, where trees to the left and heather to the right need to be avoided. A small brook crosses the fairway 90 yards out from the green, which is itself well-protected by two strategically placed greenside bunkers.

Occasionally you may tune into the faint drone of the M27 motorway, but its not too bothersome and doesn't spoil the otherwise tranquil nature of this wonderful woodland and the excellent golf course that meanders through it.

In 1946 Stoneham hosted the inaugural British Masters (called the Dunlop Masters at that time), a tournament which quickly became established as a top event on the European Tour schedule. Another prestigious national competition, the Brabazon Trophy, was held at Stoneham in 1993. In the clubhouse you'll find one of the best Captain's portrait galleries you will see in any golf club bar.
